How High Will You Fly?

At the beginning of every season, every team starts at the same place: zero wins – zero losses.  So it’s customary for every fan to believe that their team is going all the way; well, almost every fan.  All of my football friends are asking me how my Eagles (pronounced “Iggles”) will do this season. My answer is always the same: since the Eagles have a new coach, the jury is still out on how high they will fly.

How many wins will we get?  What will our record be? 9-7? 10-6? (much more than that seems like we’re asking too much). And will we beat the hated, dreaded, evil-empire Washington Redskins in the opener on Monday Night?  Is it worth getting all “hyped up” when we’ve gotten all hyped up before only to be let down? Questions, questions.

The real question is this: how high will YOU fly? It is a religious question. Not a question about religion, but about faith.

Everyone, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, Muslims and Mormons, agnostics and atheists alike all have the capacity to fly.  It doesn’t matter whether you believe in God at this stage in your life or not; it’s not where you start, its how and where you finish.   Every man, woman, boy and girl was created, yes created, to fly.  To fly means to soar, so excel, to go beyond our wildest dreams.

David sang “Oh that I had wings like a dove! For then would I fly away, and be at rest” (Psalm 55:6). And we sing, “Some glad morning, when this life is over, I’ll fly away” (Albert E. Brumley, 1929). While these songs speak of getting above and beyond and away from problems and the cares of this life, they also carry the connotation of getting closer to Him.

God is looking for those who want to fly.  God is seeking for those who have a perfect heart towards Him. God is searching for all those who have a pure heart.  To truly fly means to trust Him with your whole heart.  No reservations. No hesitations. No limitations.

How high will you fly?  How high you fly is not determined by your race, gender, creed or color. You don’t have to belong to any particular denomination. You don’t have to be a member of the largest church in town. You don’t even have to go to church EVERY Sunday (oops, just hit a nerve!)  On the contrary, you do have to have a longing for God, for truth and for what is right.  If you have a yearning for charity and purity, have a love for all humanity with a desire to embrace divinity, I believe the Almighty will reveal His sovereignty to you.

The sky is the limit to what you can have, if you just believe.  (As for my Iggles, the jury is still out!)

I Believe I Can Fly

I used to think that I could not go on And life was nothing but an awful song But now I know the meaning of true love
I’m leaning on the everlasting arms

If I can see it then I can do it
If I just believe it there’s nothing to it

1 I believe I can fly
I believe I can touch the sky
I think about it every night and day
Spread my wings and fly away
I believe I can soar
I see me running through that open door
I believe I can fly
I believe I can fly
I believe I can fly

See I was on the verge of breaking down
Sometimes silence can seem so loud
There are miracles in life I must achieve
But first I know it starts inside of me oh

If I can see it then I can be it
If I just believe it there’s nothing to it

Repeat 1

Hey cuz I believe in me oh

If I can see it then I can do it
If I just believe it there’s nothign to it

Repeat 1

Hey if I just spread my wings
I can fly
I can fly
I can fly hey
If I just spread my wings
I can fly
Fly eye eye
